January, 2009

A lot has been going on since Gustav and Ike (the two hurricanes that lambasted South Louisiana in August and September…)

Digital Sac-a'-Lait Productions moved the entire studio out of town for Gustav!  This took two full days of taking down the gear, packing it, and evacuating to Arkansas!  (Thanks to Leslie Schilling for the awesome hospitality!)  As preparations were made to set back up, Ike threatened- and it wasn’t good.  Thankfully, after two weeks of delays, everything turned out well.  The studio was back on-line by the end of September.

Singer/songwriter Hugh Watson officially released his debut album “The Drowning Man” on December 3, 2008.  Hugh’s fans have been anxiously awaiting this album!  Based on the average number of plays on his MySpace site, Hugh is up there with artists with record deals- at times hundreds of plays per day!  The album is a collection of all-original songs and is in the “Progressive Soul” genre with a little taste of rock.  The album release parties are in January.  Purchase will be available online and at other outlets soon.  For now, you can get it by contacting Hugh directly via his Myspace site.

Songwriter/singer/recording artist Elman Authement is making some serious waves in the

Christian Music world!  Elman has been one of the primary songwriters for the three TFC albums released.  (Folks in the Houma, LA area regularly see his work performed on HTV).  His songs have been covered by artists from Nashville, Phoenix, and Tampa Bay.

Elman is in the studio working on his first solo album.

Songwriter/singer/TV executive Martin Folse has wrapped up his debut album.  It’s mixed, mastered, and ready for press.  The album will have at least twenty original songs- all written by Martin over the last five years.  The album features the talents of South Louisiana musicians Waylon Thibodeaux, Kevin Koike, Billy Stark, Todd Adams, Richard Toups, and others.

Songwriter/singer/recording artist Eric Geibel is adding to his catalog of original songs.  Eric has been in the studio consistently since 2006.  His first album release “Just the Other Day” continues to get rave reviews.  In fact, one cut from that album “Breaking Hearts in Heaven” was number one on the charts of IAC (the Independent charts of Cashbox Magazine- which is only second to Billboard)!  It’s a stellar accomplishment.  Eric was just in the studio with Waylon Thibodeaux who is in the running for a Grammy nomination!

Songwriter/guitarist/singer Chris Wells released an album in 1993 called “Rooms with Color.”  The album featured over thirty different singers.  One song from the album “Pulling it Together to keep it Together” has the ingredients to become a classic- as it features dozens of the best singers in South Louisiana!  Chris is now in the studio working on the follow-up album.  Two songs are done and at least eight more are on the way!

Singer/recording artist/songwriter Lyn Cantrelle has two albums.  She’s very popular in the east- the Far East- like Japan!  She gets royalty checks every month from online sales of her album and the majority of those sales come from abroad!  Lyn is working on her third album!  It will be a collection of classic country songs with (at least) two original songs.

Songwriter/guitarist/singer Dean Shoultz is back in the studio.  After taking over a year off to tend to his thriving software business, Dean has found the time to wrap up his first album.  The album will feature Dean’s guitar wizardry but also features two songs that he sings.  It rocks!

Songwriter/singer/recording/artist and Physical Therapist Drew Rice continues adding to his extensive catalog of original songs.  He released his debut album “Uncharted Waters” in 2004 to rave reviews.  Since, he has written and recorded (fully produced) twenty-eight more songs!  Drew has attracted the attention of a bunch of Nashville cats.

Singer/songwriter Rosanna Marcel has a new single out titled “Stupid Words.”  Check it out on her MySpace site!  The other two songs on her site “With Me” and “Coffee in the Morning” were co-produced by Drew Rice.

Singer Lindsay Mendez was in the studio recently and recorded a cover of Susan Tedeschi’s “It Hurts So Bad.”  More songs are coming!  Check out her MySpace site!

Singer/songwriter/recording artist Richard Toups was hired by Digital Sac-a'-Lait Productions to sing on two songs written by songwriter Michael Colvin- who lives in Germany.  The online music collaboration portal StudioTraxx (based in New York) coordinated the arrangement between the producer (Digital Sac-a'-Lait Productions) and the songwriter (Mr. Colvin).  It’s proof that a company from South Louisiana is doing world-class work!

Songwriter Billy Gros is in the studio working on his debut CD.  So far, two tracks have been cut.  One is on his MySpace site.  It’s a blues tune titled “My Baby Left Me and I Don’t Know Why” and it rocks!

Songwriter/recording artist/swamp tour operator and local legend Ron “Black” Guidry was filmed for an MTV segment.  It was shot at the end of the summer and will feature two original Black Guidry songs.  One is “Mudbug Boogie” from his latest album “Dulac You Want.”  The album is available at most online outlets and on Black's swamp tour boat, (which is an awesome experience)!

At a recent concert in South Louisiana the two acts performing each did something unique- both covered a Crawdiddy song.  First, Mellowberry (a group that sings everything in Cajun French) covered “Maybelle.”  The featured act Waylon Thibodeaux did his awesome version of “Cher Bebe” (the title cut off his latest album).  Both songs will be on the second Crawdiddy album that will be available soon!  The song “Momma’s Cookin’ Gumbo” from first Crawdiddy release- Alligator Joe- is becoming a classic in South Louisiana!

April, 2008

Pershing Wells- owner of Digital Sac-a'-Lait Productions- is now an official voting member of National  Association of Recording Arts and Sciences (the Grammy's).

Digital Sac-a'-Lait Productions is a full-service recording/production business located in Houma, LA.  Owner/producer Pershing Wells has been in the music business for over 35 years and brings a vast amount of musical knowledge and experience to the production process.  He has worked with some of the best in the business- Percy Sledge, Mitch Ryder, Fats Domino, Ernie K-Doe, Jean "Mr. Big Stuff" Knight, King "Groove Me" Floyd, and almost all of the swamp pop legends in South Louisiana.

As of January, 2009, Digital Sac-a'-Lait Productions has produced 36 album releases with more on the way.  We've produced over 500 original songs from a blank container.  Most of our clients return for more work.  Our work has been called "an engineering marvel" by the press.

The input chain currently consists of the following and is extremely high end:

Neumann, AKG, Rode, and CAD microphones

A-Designs Pacifica microphone preamps

A-Designs "the Hammer" tube equalizers

Drawmer 1968ME compressors (tube)

DBX Compressors

RME DA/AD converters

Sonar 7.02 DAW

Quadcore 6600 PC (four 2.6GHZ processors) with 4 Meg RAM (meaning dozens of tracks- we've yet to reach a limit)

Other gear:

Fender Hot Rod Deluxe Amplifier (all tube)

Gibson Les Paul Jr. Amplifier (5 watt class A- all tube)

Takamine TAN-15 acoustic guitar

G&L ASAT electric guitar

G&L S-500 electric guitar

Roland and Mackie monitors

AKG and Sony Headphones

Roland Digital Reverb

Korg Triton Rack

Roland JV-1080 Rack

Dimension Pro Soft Synth

Of course the gear is as good as the person using it.  Our analogy is "platinum quality recording equipment in the hands of an unskilled engineer could be as damaging as Pershing sitting at the wheel of a bulldozer"...

The Producer/Arranger...

Artists are not always best suited to get from point "A' to point "Z" in the most efficient and productive manner.  Untamed, they've been known to spend months in the recording studio- and accomplish little.  (I personally know of some high-end musicians who have been "working on their album" for years!)  A producer is focused on getting the album finished within a specified time schedule so that record companies can plan release dates, marketing strategies, and other things associated with promoting a finished album.  A record producer's role is also to guide the artist through the process of creating  his art.  The producer lends the "critical ear" to the process to make certain everything going on the record is technically right.  (It's amazing how critical this is to a successful record yet how often it is ignored).   Almost every major recording star of the past and the present used a producer and/or arranger.  Why?  Because record companies are businesses and want their products to be as perfect and shiny as (for example) a new car that you buy.  While this may sound like an "expensive" option to some, a few things should be considered.  If your motive in the creation/recording process is to record a demo ("demo" is defined as "non-critical listening"), then recording yourself isn't a bad idea.  However, if you're looking to compete for radio airplay, pitch songs to record companies,  or to sell your records, it is a better (and ultimately a more cost-effective) idea to get professional assistance.  Consulting with a professional who has worked in the music industry, knows the music business, and is "musical" is the best place to start.

We're all that...

Digital Sac-a-Lait Productions is a world-class full-service music production business located in Houma, Louisiana.  It is owned and operated by professional musician, recording engineer, and producer Pershing Wells.   Our services go beyond a typical recording studio.  We are “Song Sculptors.”   Whether your song is only an idea or whether it’s real but requires a professional arrangement we can help you.  We take your songs from conception to completion.   The finished product is worthy of radio airplay anywhere.  Our production work has been called “…a stunning musical portrait” by Offbeat Magazine in New Orleans.   The Times Picayune voted one of our album productions (“Been Down that Muddy Road” by Joe Barry) one of the top 25 regional albums of 2003.  The Baltimore Sun (yes, in Maryland) has called our work “…an engineering marvel.”  Seattle, Washington based e-magazine No Depression voted our work one of the top twenty albums of 2003- above the likes of Dolly Parton!  We have contracted work for record and publishing companies in New York.  However, our primary goal is to offer affordable yet classy song arrangement, production, and recording to anyone seriously interested in making an album or to shop songs to record or publishing companies.

 Our services include:
